[personal profile] diffrentcolours told me a long time ago that there was going to be a movie about Mister Rogers, and then yesterday he said it was out now. So this morning we watched the documentary on Netflix, Won't You Be My Neighbor?, to give him a bit of a crash-course in Mr. Rogers because his childhood was sadly lacking in it. That was a nice way to spend this morning: Gary and I had stayed overnight so it was very cozy to be snuggled under a blanket between the two of them and watch it.

I'd seen it before (which is why I thought it'd be a good introduction), on a plane on my way to the U.S. So at least I knew I'd cry, and I did, but at a different bit than I remember.

Then we went to Ikea with Mal in the afternoon (my second trip ever, I still hated it, but at least bringing a Swedish person along meant I learned some more about how to pronounce the names of things!) and just barely had time to go see A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood at the cinea. We hadn't had time for dinner so shared nachos and he had a terrible cinema hot dog.

I really enjoyed it, and I was so pleased that [personal profile] diffrentcolours did too. It made for a pretty cathartic day, really. Mr. Rogers is such a good influence.

I might watch that. It's one of those weird things for people who grew up here that have percolated into my consciousness without ever having been 'real'.

I'm glad that we have film of Mr. Rogers, because that means we get to have his influence and reminders from him for generations to come. And that's really rather awesome.

Sweet W hadn't seen much, if any of Mr Rogers as a child. We went to see Won't You Be My Neighbor together when it first came to the neighborhood theater a couple years ago. He has a great appreciation for the man, as I've had since childhood. When I was teaching high school, I got home from work shortly before the show aired each day. I'd get a bowl of chocolate chips, sit on the couch and watch Mr Rogers to help me wind down from the stress of the day. It was the first tv show I allowed my own children to watch when they were small.
