I wonder if I, though entirely not Catholic these days, might like a St. Christopher medal.

I realized that I don't know anything about Christopher except that he has the same name as my brother and is on medallions, so I thought I'd look him up.

Turns out he's either a giant or ogre, eighteen feet tall, or a cannibal with the head of a dog, of enormous size and terrifying demeanor.

Yes, I definitely think I like this guy.

He's also the patron saint of travelers. And if I am anything these days, it is a traveler.

Oh, it seems he's invoked against bubonic plague, too. Something to keep in mind.

I have one, but never wear it. It is a relic inherited from my great-grandmother, who came over on the boat from Italy.

On my jacket I wear a pin for St. Florian because that's my great grandfather's name. It's certainly not unusual. He's the patron saint of firefighters.

St. Christopher's name means "Christ-bearer" onnacounta he... oh, you already went to Wikipedia. Anyway, cool.

It got...lost...in an unfortunate accident =( -=weeps=-

I have a St. Christopher's medal that my mom used to wear. Would you like it? Just send me your address (ambershaye @ msn. com) and it'll be on it's way to you.

((hugs))

I have one that I wear all the time - had one when I came to England, but I lost it.

I could definitely help a girl out with a medal. Let me know.

You don't have to be a Catholic to want a St Christopher medal. In fact, St Christopher was excommunicated around the time of Vatican II, on the ludicrous grounds that he didn't exist. The Discordians, however, adopted him, along with all the other fictional saints...

You know, I'm not entirely convinced putting one's faith in an OBJECT actually works, BUT-----my FIL has always had jobs that required lots & lots of time behind the wheel of a car. He has always carried a St. Christopher medal in his pocket, usually a silver one.

The last one he had was worn COMPLETELY smooth, and someone gave him a new one as a gift a few years ago.

He's never had so much as a fender bender. Not in 30+ years.

I had a St. Christopher medal on my second hand well-used brick red mid-sixties Western Flyer bicycle with chrome-tipped fenders and a leather saddle and I reveled in the possibility that I was being protected, even as I'd point that battered bike over every insane red clay cliff in Scaggsville.

I'm not Catholic, either, but the idea of a patron saint is a powerful thing.
