Wake me when spring training starts
Oct. 17th, 2003 10:12 amI hate it when the World Series isn't worth watching. But this may be the worst one in ... well, a lot longer than I've been watching the World Series.
The Yankees and the Marlins would be uninteresting, even if it weren't for the fact that we know the Cubs and the Red Sox aren't there.
It's he Marlins' victorious return, after buying themselvess championship rings with a team of players they were just borrowing from other teams for a year, so they could gloat at how quickly their lame expansion team made it big. The Yankees, who perennially buy themselves good teams, have lots of money and lots of wins but no soul.
I hope they're all happy. They stole our magic.
It doesn't matter if it's curse or coincidence or choking or Bartman's fault. This is what we're left with, and it sucks.

Date: 2003-10-17 09:00 am (UTC)And after the crappy way the Cininnatti Reds treated Jack McKeon (hey Reds fans you could've made it to the Series if Jack had stayed your manager), a Marlins win would be poetic justice.
If you can't have lovable losers like the Cubs and Red Sox playing each other, the next best thing is rooting against the big, bad Yankess -- no matter who they play.

I agree with your friend...
Date: 2003-10-17 09:12 am (UTC)I'm not even a fan of baseball, and I will still rooting for the Cubs and the Red Sox. I rooted for the Cubs because they haven't been to the World Series in so long, and I was rooting for the Red Sox because I always support the teams in Boston (after the Minnesota teams, of course) because I have a long-time, sports-fanatic friend who lives out there.
O'well...life will go on...at least for me. :)

Date: 2003-10-17 09:56 am (UTC)The Yankees are about everything bad--materialism, selfishness, narcissism--whereas there are people who've spent whole careers with teams like the Red Sox or the Cubs, though they don't get the same money or glory or fame, because they love it. And there are fans who've followed those teams their whole lives without getting the satisfaction of a championship parade in Boston or the south side of Chicago, but they love them anyway, unconditionally. That's dedication.
The Yankees had a lot of the great heroes of baseball, back in the day, but now they have a legacy of fairweather fans, of bullies, of evil soulless corporate America, and that is why we hate them. It's sometimes fun to hate them; it shows that we do recognize goodness when we see it.
But still, I'd rather be rooting for the Red Sox or the Cubs than hating the Yankees right now.
