I read over something for a friend the other day, and after e-mailing it back to them I got a reply that made me smile:

Thanks! You are the comma fairy :) <,,,,,> I have no idea where the beastly little fuckers are supposed to go.

My first team leader used to send out emails with a bunch of punctuation at the end and a note saying 'insert as appropriate'.

I once had a great rant with a friend's mum who is German, she said she really could not understand the English comma. Her English was near as damnit perfect in that it wasn't just "technically correct" like many Germans manage but also colloquially fluent after 20 years in the UK married to an Englishman but commas completely flummoxed her.
