I once had a great rant with a friend's mum who is German, she said she really could not understand the English comma. Her English was near as damnit perfect in that it wasn't just "technically correct" like many Germans manage but also colloquially fluent after 20 years in the UK married to an Englishman but commas completely flummoxed her.
