Strangest thing happened to me this morning.

Gary demanded a walk around ten o'clock. That in itself is pretty strange. He hadn't even had the painkillers for his arthritic legs yet and usually he's sleepy at least until they've kicked in, if not longer.

I took him outside, we didn't go far and were gone five or ten minutes before he wanted to go back. When we got back inside, I saw a cardboard box near where I usually sit on the sofa that hadn't been there before. It'd been opened but on the angled top flap I could see it said "for Erik." Confused I looked inside and among some paper packaging I saw a bottle of rum "infused with leftover Dominican cocoa husks from Glasgow's Bare Bones chocolate."

No one was around downstairs to ask about it. I wandered around to check. I went back and looked at the box again, noticing it had been addressed to [personal profile] diffrentcolours. The idea he'd gotten me a present didn't seem odd at all (he bought me that agender t-shirt I've worn to death, the things USians call suspenders and Brits call braces that were a bit of a joke that I've actually found really useful...he buys me good gifts), I was just baffled at the way it...suddenly appeared, like this.

The rum inspired me to finally do what I've been saying I'll do for months, which is make ice cubes in the fancy cocktail ice cube trays I got, which make big cubes or spheres that, I dunno, have the right surface area or something to melt at the perfect rate. They're perfect for old fashioneds (I got them as part of a "everything you need but the whisky" old-fashioned-making kit as a birthday present one year, when I said I had too much whisky already: glasses, sugar syrup, ice cube trays and bitters).

I eventually found out that Dave had come downstairs for breakfast after Gary and I went out, so he was handily nearby when the postie knocked and he could open the box before disappearing back upstairs to work before we got back.

All of which is to say I'm sitting outside with this drink now. (I know I don't have any orange peel in it, but I used orange bitters!)
