18 What is the most extreme weather you have ever experienced?

The Halloween storm of '91 is still talked about by Minnesotans; we didn't have electricity for five days so lived in the basement of our house, which had a wood-burning stove, and went to my grandparents' to do laundry and for my brother and I to have baths and stuff. We didn't even have school that week because the school lost power too.

It looks like my parents, and their whole area of the state, have had a nasty storm now too -- to the point where [personal profile] po8crg even mentioned yesterday that he hoped they had plenty of supplies to wait it out. They definitely will and my dad will be loving it: he drove to and from work through awful weather, so many times in his life when the sensible thing would've been to stay home but he'd never consider it; when he worked in the same town where my grandparents lived, he'd keep a change of clothes and stuff there because he'd sometimes be unable to make it home. Now that he's retired he lives for these big storms, safe in the knowledge that he doesn't have to go anywhere.

I have actually done a bit more work on an essay today, first time since I went totally mental on Tuesday. Proud of that.

The group I was working with all semester didn't do a very good job of the work I am supposed to be writing up that I'm having to start it over from scratch. I'm annoyed about this but not despairing like I was, which I'm taking as a good sign.

It's only a tiny bit of work, but I'd actually reached the point where it was more stressful not to go back to it. Which is nice, because a tiny illogical part of my brain worried this would end up like the last time I tried to get a degree, when it all went wrong in the last year and I had to leave in disgrace. I really really don't want anything like that to happen. I learned a lot from that, and I've done a lot of things better, all through my time at uni here, because of that, so I don't intend for that to fall apart now. But it's still a little bit scary, a little bit triggery really. So I didn't want to leave it too long before I tried to get back to work.
