"Why are you dating her?" Jenn asked Matthew. Not in the voice that means she's serious, but the one that means she's being silly but might still be attempting to convey something more in earnest than in jest. "I mean really. You tease her, you don't do anything for her, you're mean to her ... I think you're defective."

Instead of arguing that he isn't mean to me (my protestations to the contrary are usually accompanied by extenuating circumstances, such as him tickling me or trying to put the remote control in my shirt), I merely smiled and sipped my Pepsi. Instead of arguing that he does do things for me, Matthew thought for a second and answered simply: "She asked me."

And that is positively irrefutable! Matthew has ths tendency to think before he speaks and come up with logical thoughts. It's terribly annoying sometimes--why do you think I've had to resort to poking him in the first place!--and it stopped Jenn's argument in its tracks this time.

She thought about this for a second and turned to me. "Why are you dating him?!" she asked. "I think you're defective!"

Too bad I didn't come with a warranty. Or even an instruction manual.
