My friend is afraid her boyfriend is going to ask her to marry him.

That's okay with me. I've been in enough weddings recently.

I understand how weird it is to think that, just because you've been dating for a handful of months (since September or October, in this case) and your relationship is going along fairly smoothly, you and everyone around you starts to wonder about the prospect of you getting married.

"It's forever," she said, really drawing out all three syllables. It's not really true that everyone's jaded about marriage now; some people still respect the institution. We are two of them.

"I'm nineteen!" she said. Sure, I was just at the wedding of two 19-year-olds, but that doesn't mean I don't sympathize. I remember being nineteen. Until a week or two before my twentieth birthday, I hadn't been asked on a date or kissed goodnight or anything.

My favorite part was when she said, "I'm just afraid that on my wedding night I'm gonna hear Vincent Price's voice in my head saying 'Forever-er-er' in a creepy, echo-y voice. And I'll curl up in a ball and say 'Aaahhhh! Vincent Price is in my bedroom!"

Yeah, that is a scary image. And it might require a bit of explanation to one's new spouse.

I didn't have much to tell her--no one's threatening to propose to me--but I did say that's okay to date without getting married. Or it's okay to agree to get married in five years or something. Marriage, luckily, is not a now-or-never offer. I'm sure she knew all that, but hearing it seemed to make her feel better.

I told her it was wedding season, too. She knows I was in one on Friday. Heck, my parents' anniversary is today (31 years!). And she mentioned something about knowing other people who're getting married soon, too. People who started dating when she and her boyfriend did are now engaged. (Naturally such a line of thought could be disturbing, especially to one who's leery of telling even me that she loves her boyfriend.) There are always zillions of weddings between, say, April and August.

"Everybody's twitterpated," she said.

"Exactly!" Maybe love is in the air in the spring. It's like pollen. And I think at least some people are allergic to it, like pollen.
