Today I helped facilitate training at work which is fun but tiring: almost four hours of being on camera (I dressed up for the occasion today, in a button down shirt with a sweater over it...and still my fuzzy slippers), reaching the limits of even my extrovert tendencies.
And when it was done I had just enough time to join the last half-hour of training for my team about "making meetings work for you" so I have no idea what happened before but I got there just in time for a version of "would you rather" that had been toned down for work...slightly. "I'm gonna pick on people who haven't talked much," one of these facilitators said, so of course after she explained the hypothetical situation (would you rather eat a turd sandwich but no one ever knew, or have everyone you met think you had eaten a turd sandwich when you hadn't), the other facilitator called on me, saying "I know you just got here..."
This is the kind of thing that could be horrifying in the wrong workplace but in mine was just hilarious. And I had wondered if I'd hear my name when literally the first thing I heard when I got into the video call were about calling on people who hadn't said much.
And one of these options was so clearly better than the other I just charged ahead. "The second one," I said. "People already think I'm weird! I don't care!" That thing I won't say again outside the cut tag wouldn't repel some people any more than real facts about me like that I'm queer or trans or disabled or an immigrant.
So yeah, that was my work day!
