When [personal profile] diffrentcolours was looking through old games to make some room on the PS4, he found Donut County and asked if I'd ever finished it. I said I'd gotten stuck on a level (again, this happened once before and I needed his help).

I got stuck because I haven't been able to play video games since Tetris so I am just not familiar with the language of video games: what kinds of things are there to do, what's expected of me, how careful do I have to be in movements and timing and etc. And all that's assuming I can see things well enough to play at all, which is extremely rare; this is one of two games he's bought for me that I can play (the other one I think I'm also stuck on, heh).

So we put it on and he helped me through that level (we ended up having to look it up and that still didn't completely solve it for us! so I still got to have the final tiny epiphany myself). And he helped with the ensuing boss fight. But, with that help, I finished the game! I never finish games! I haven't really played video games since they've been a thing you can finish!

Then he's teased me, calling me a gamer boy and saying the next thing I need is sponsorship from Monster energy drinks and Axe.

Hurrah!

It is lovely when playing games when someone can help you over the impossible bit so you still get to enjoy the whole game. It would be nice if that was a feature that people could activate or not.

My cousins used to have games we were less good at than them, they'd help us over the tricky bit on our turns, or let my little sister have an extra turn if she died like instantly on a level cos the purpose was to "take it in turns" which kinda meant fairish time as much as progress. I hadn't realised how unusual this was, cos we just always did it like this, covering an age range of 4.5 years which as pre-teens was a lot. Then another mutual cousin visited and despite being middle-oldest he tried to stop us letting the youngest have help or an extra go. We ended up having to bundle him out of the room cos he was so noxious... Noxious cousin tried to get us all into trouble, but we managed to convince angry adults that it was noxious cousin who had ruined things (4:1 helps).

I always appreciated help with games cos I can't always do the coordination. These days my hands are so fragile I haven't gamed much at all. I played a bit of Untitled Goose which was not time critical or difficult.
