I went to see the movie about the Springsteen obsessive with my Springsteen-obsessive boyfriend this afternoon. Or, to put it another way, Stuart and I wetn to see Blinded by the Light.

While the end credits were still rolling, he said "Well that's one of the best things I've ever seen." I kinda wanted to walk right out of the cinema screen and into the next one playing it, so much did I want to see it again.

It made us want to go have dinner afterwards as an excuse to talk about the movie, which we did, a lot.

Like the best art it made me sad I wasn't doing art any more: I used to write poems and I once wanted to play the saxophone like Clarence Clemens.

A bit later in the end credits, which had "Born to Run" playing over them, I turned to Stuart and marveled that some people who'd want to go see such a film on a random weekday afternoon were also capable of leaving during the sax solo. I doubt my ability to stand up or walk when The Big Man is playing, I'm not going to leave the room where this is playing! Even if we weren't stay-for-the-credit types (which we are), the song would've been enough to keep me in my seat.

I understand the movie's enjoyable even for people who aren't whisper-singing along with all the songs (like we were), or who are convulsing in delight when we see a street sign for the road The Boss grew up on (like Stuart did). That teenage intensity about music and connection are familiar to a lot of us, and while I don't think you could have better words to accompany them than "Dancing in the Dark" and "Thunder Road," I'd still recommend it. It's about the eighties (gets everything painfully right, Stuart assures me) and Britain and being Pakistani and writing and being a teenager and it's just great at all of those things as far as I can tell.

We just got back from seeing that, and very much enjoyed it.

Speaking as someone who is not a Springsteen mega-fan, it is very accessible and fun to watch.
