Plumber was here for two hours to sort out a complicated job. Andrew and Gary both find it really stressful, even though the plumber was nice and great this time.

I've spent most of the hour since on the phone with Student Finance England, the most inscrutable and arbitrary bastards I've dealt with since the Home Office.

Now I have to go talk to a bank where I don't remember the answers to my security questions. That's always fun. Put this off until tomorrow because I needed a nap.

Then I have to go to class! Via some ableist bullshit.

What a day.

Not a lot of sleep, but at least a reasonable amount of resting.

I think it's a good sign that in so interested in my lectures that I'm looking forward to it not just the first week when everything was easy and an adventure but this week when everything's been...well, everything that it's been. :)

I remember Student Loans Company Ltd (as they then were) from when I was a student, 27 years ago.

They clearly haven't changed anything other than their name.

If anything they're slightly worse. Apparently they can't pay Holly's loan into our joint account, because it was the same loan mine was paid into twenty years ago and they don't allow "duplicates"...

What an utterly SLCish reason to say no. I'd say DPA the fuckers but it's probably easier to just give them another bank account IF Holly has one.

I do, I had to set up a separate one when I moved here because Reasons, before we made Andrew's into a joint account. I haven't really used it since 2011 or so when I stopped getting the benefits that keep getting paid in to it.

Actually been thinking all summer I should get around to closing it but for once procrastination pays off!

Sadly it's one of those things worth having in your own name even if rarely used. Some orgs are twats about joint accounts. Some employers won't pay into joint accounts either.

Well done for procrastinating and for not setting fire to SLC. It should be a drinking game! (Mine's tea can totally play drinking games with tea right!)

My mum got completely fucked over for not having a single bank account in her own name - the bank accounts were all joint with my dad so when he left things got awkward. She had building society accounts in just her name but no banks and that was a right hassle, combined with the local bank branches being cunty to her - they made my lovely mother cry when she was already having a hard time... *scowl* She used to go to the other town for banking cos they weren't cunts, which was a shame cos the building society people were lovely in both towns, which is why she had building society people cos they were patient and it suited her dyslexia brain and way of doing money.

Oh yes, my mum says hi and wishes you the best of luck with your linguistics degree, she thinks you doing uni sounds awesome and is really pleased you got in.

They haven't really changed the name even: Student Finance England and the others are just subsets of that because I guess the rules have changed sufficiently in those different jurisdictions.

I have been fighting with the electricity company who have put a second meter on my account. Which only has estimated readings on, for which I'm paying.

The actual meter doesn't seem to have ever existed, so I'm paying estimated bills on a ghost meter. Lovely, I wondered why I was suddenly overdrawn!

Ghost meter should be a much more exciting thing than it is to spend money on. :) Good luck getting it sorted out.
