I have some horror stories from a friend who moved to rural Ireland, mind - things are very expensive over there, particularly medicines, and entitlement to healthcare for existing chronic conditions is poor.
There's no way Andrew would move to rural anywhere, I think. But yes, the expense of living there was the first thing I mentioned too. I was somewhat amused though that I seem in principle more capable of contemplating a move to another country than I am to moving to a part of Manchester that isn't Levenshulme :)
I said "I...don't know! I never thought about it before!" He's the one who's so intent on living where we live; other than missing my dear friends here (which is a big deal!) I wouldn't necessarily miss much about Manchester because I've never liked it for anything other than the good people I know here.
Andrew works for a big company doing a job he isn't super-keen on. There are other kinds of jobs in this company he think he'd like more, but apparently there are none available in the UK at the moment and there are some in Ireland.
I think I'd really struggle to move away from all my friends here, but other than that I'd at least look into what it'd be like to live there and if it was a comparable quality of life and a less crazy-making job for my dear husband, I'd certainly consider it a worthwhile adventure.
I don't think it's very likely, and I think it'd be better for him to get a job at a different company anyway, so I don't think you have to worry just yet about me moving away before you meet me :)
I can totally see you in Ireland, spouting off sayings in Gaeilge like Trí rudaí faoin ól: é ól, é iompair, agus é íoc. ("Three things about the drink: to drink it, to hold it, and to pay for it.")
Uh-huh. Well, I dabble in it here in L.A., but I'd really rather be in the shadow of Benbulben (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Bulben), má tá a fhios agat cad is ciall i. :)
I believe we have mutual friends who know good people over in Dublin certainly but yes it is not a cheap place to live. Could be worth investigating properly.
Ah yes, thank you for the reminder that I know people who will know more about this :)
I really think it is quite a tenuous reason to go there, as I explained in the reply to everywordiwrite but mostly it was just such a completely random and unexpected question that i had to share.
I am one of the mutual friends who knows a fair few people in/near Dubllin, as well as a couple in each of Belfast, Limerick, Cork so poke me if you wanted to chat to peoples.
