Sweets fit for the best Valentine's Day
Feb. 17th, 2010 07:18 pmMy parents sent me a picture of what it looked like at their place this weekend.

I always loved days like this, when it looks like the tree branches have been dipped in sugar.*
I can’t help but think that’s what this time of year should look like. Even after years living here, my brain gets tired in ways it never does when I’m looking at these vistas I grew up with, at any time of year.
* Or salt. I read a fantastic book about the history of salt and one of the things I remember most vividly from it is the image of workers in Cheshire salt mines dipping branches in the vats of brine to make Christmas decoarations; they’d come out looking more convincingly snowy than anythihng you’re likely to see in this wretched climate.

It has been the longest, coldest, wettest, greyest winter in a long time. Month after month of unrelenting drabness takes its toll when its the permanent backdrop for life's difficultues.
