I have a dream
Jul. 16th, 2005 06:09 pmI want to be back for the State Fair.
I want to be around before my mom goes back to work (school will start either just before or just after Labor Day, which is the last day of the fair).
I want to see some real summer, eat hamburgers and steak cooked on the grill, have lots of sweet corn, listen to Twins games on the radio ... heck, maybe if I'm really lucky I can get someone to take me to a real one! (I can dream, can't I?)
Sure, I don't know how we'll afford plane tickets by the end of August. But I don't know how we'll afford them by the end of September, either, and that's when my six "oh I'm just here on holiday" months are up. I may as well get what I want, right?
And I wanna be part of the Great Minnesota Get-Together! Get me together with some Minnesotans, please. Englishes also welcome.* C'mon, you'll love it; I promise.
And anyway, I figure if I'm going to take Andrew to a plce he doesn't want to be anyway, I may as well take him there at the peak of its glory--its cheesy, smelly, sunburned glory on a stick.

hollowfulofhat's perceptive remarks at the bottom of that thread: "My abiding memories are of many, many kinds of food on sticks and all the farm boys who are on their one annual trip to the big city. And the smell of the swine barn. It would certainly be a better way of getting to know the "real" America than a trip to midtown Manhattan or Disney World."

I should ask him what he found so alluring in Minnesota, so I can make another English boy want to stay. :-)

Date: 2005-07-17 08:16 pm (UTC)I told him about the Beach Boys playing at Mystic Lake and he just said, "Yeah, I know." Figures. Good job with trying to tempt him, though; that's exactly the sort of temptatiion he needs!
