Not that long ago, Andrew happened to use the computer when I was logged in, and also happened to close or minimize all the windows. "Oh!" he said. "That's a nice picture! We like that."
I wasn't near the screen, I was looking for the book I was reading, and thus had no chance of knowing what he was talking about, so I asked, "What are you talking about?"
"Your wallpaper," he said.
I grinned. I guess I can see why he'd like that. I'd almost forgotten about it, having changed it several days before and not spending a whole lot of time looking at my desktop myself, but I did agree that I'd chosen well.
Having found my book, I settled down next to him on the couch and opened it. It was actually not quite a book but a graphic novel, From Hell.
Andrew looked at me and saw this, then looked back at the computer and said, "You're a good girlfriend, you like Doctor Who and Alan Moore comics, that's good." I giggled, thinking that such characteristics must be a dream come true for a geek like him.
A little while later,
ivana_duboise told me about this Penny Arcade strip, which is good because I wouldn't have seen it otherwise. Considering that Andrew is a cartoonist himself these days, I thought I had to show him this. But rather than just doing something boring like e-mailing it to him ... well, I suppose the content of this post might give it away. Yep, I made it the picture on his desktop.
The next time I saw the screen when he was logged in, I saw it had changed. No longer did I see Gabe and Tycho there, but rather a bright green background with five of those South Park create-a-character characters. My joke had been duly noticed and commented upon, which was all I wanted, so it didn't matter to me what he did any more, and if he wanted random South-Park-looking people, he could have them.

Sitting down at the computer when he got home yesterday, he said, "Did you notice my new background?"
I was in the kitchen, making dinner. "Oh, the South Park people? Yeah, I did."
And then he said the weirdest thing.
He said, "They're the Beach Boys."
I blinked. I'd barely glanced at the figures, but I think even if I'd studied them closely it would not have occurred to me that they were supposed to look like the Beach Boys.
"This one on the end is Dennis," Andrew told me, "because he's got blond hair..." And after that I stopped listening. But I know the next one must be Carl, because he's got lots of hair. Carl Wilson basically looks like Andrew (this is a thing that gets commented upon when Andrew meets various members of the Beach Boys, which is the sort of thing Andrew does a couple of times a year). Al's the little one, because he's short. I know this because Andrew tells me he looks like Richie Cunningham from Happy Days crossed with a gnome. And the bald one with the beard is definitely Mike Love. So I guess that means the one in the middle is Brian. I can't believe I know enough to figure all this out.
South Park Beach Boys. I ask ya.
