Happiness

I'm unhappy, I thought. I must need more coffee.

So I took my empty cup to Darren and told him that. "I'm unhappy," I said as I slid it across the counter. "I need more coffee." He refilled it and handed it back to me.

It does help, but if there were really such a correlation between happiness and coffee, I'd have set new records for bliss tonight, because I think I had at least eight cups, most in the first hour or two. (I was hanging out at the Coffee Hag while Darren worked.) I don't think I've had even half that at one sitting before.

But there's no such relationship between coffee and happiness. So I'm still convinced I'm a faker, only pretending to have a life, pretending to be capable of doing things for myself.

Tangentially, my biologist fiancee told me last night that a coffee addiction only takes three days to start.

I was thinking yesterday that I can't remember the last time I had what I consider "real" coffee at all: in England everyone drinks instant so I avoided that, and since I've been back I've been with my parents and my mom only makes decaf because the caffeiene gives her heacaches, so I imagine the last time I had coffee I really enjoyed drinking was at least six months ago, when I was close to a coffee shop and living with two people who drank coffee all the time.

Caffeine doesn't seem to have any effect on me--I like coffee, tea, and soda, but only as drinks--so I've never really felt addicted to any of them. After those eight cups of coffee, no more than three or four of which were decaf, I came home and went to bed. So I'm not too worried about getting addicted.

I love the Coffee Hag; it's one of those coffee shops with all the pagan, liberal feminist bumper stickers and overpriced jewelry and fair-trade coffee you could hope for.
