Yesterday my mom and dad were talking about the son of a friend of theirs. He's a year younger than me and has a new girlfriend. He met her because she was a friend of a friend of his friend, or something, and thus they ended up being in the same place at some point. She and the first of those "friends" went to the same college as me. She's a teacher now.

My parents talked about this through lunch. Mutti said that the kid's dad told him that the teasing about picking out a ring isn't really that far off. After the obligatory comments about how fast that would be, my dad asked where the girl lived. Owantonna, my mom said, which is maybe 30 or 40 miles from here. "Well," Dad said, "one of the reasons you get married is so you can be in the same place without driving all over the countryside."

I had to smlie. I've been thinking about it ever since, and I don't know why. I just like that as a reason to get married: A person you marry is just someone you want to be around all the time. I know it's obvious, but I still like it.

Heh. When I asked my mother why she married my dad, she said "Because he needed a place to live."

Not quite the same thing as what your dad said, though. ;)

I feel like I'm calling into a radio show for the first time after listening for ages, so "Long time reader, first time poster..." :)

Or to gain a title. I'd marry if I got to have a title. In fact, I demand one now, just on principle. He usually ignores such requests but there are ways of making wishes known.

I do like the simplicity of what your dad said...does sort of sum it all up. :)
