Slapstick tragedy
Dec. 8th, 2004 10:40 pm1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?
I went to another country! For five months!
2. Did you keep your New Years resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't really do New Year's resolutions.
3. Did someone close to you give birth?
Yes, actually! And she didn't even tell me she was pregnant until after she had the baby. Sneaky girl.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My grandma died.
5. What countries did you visit?
The United Kingdom! And the Netherlands, if that counts.
6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?
A job. Focus, or something close enough that I can pretend I have it. More of an ability to tell my parents things they're going tohate. I have a couple saved up!
7. What dates from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The days, hours, and eventually minutes until I went to Manchester were counted down for me. That was a big day. So was coming back. So was Matthew telling me he didn't want to date me any more.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I started the standing-up-to-my-parents thing.
9. What was your biggest failure?
That's easy: school.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I think I got food poisoning (it also had some characteristics of a virus, though). That'd be a first for me.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Brian Wilson tickets.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I met someone off the Internet and he didn't seem to be a scary rapist or psycho at all; I think that's worth celebrating.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
George W. Bush. Even more than in previous years.
14. Where did most of your money go?
I had little money of my own, though the money I sort of appropriated on other people seemed to be spent on boring things like food.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Many things (I'm easily excitable) but most made me excited as well as other things. The closest I think I got to pure, unalloyed excitement was perhaps the They Might Be Giants concert.
16. What song will always remind you of 2004?
Anything from Smile
17. Compared to this time last year, are you
i. happier or hardened?
Happier.
ii. thinner or fatter?
Thinner. I am a size smaller now than I was before I left for England!
iii. richer or poorer?
Well, I think I still had my job this time last year (I quit it around this time, anyway), so probably poorer.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
More travelling in England. Just more stuff in general, less sitting around. Even though the sitting around wasn't usually my fault but imposed from external forces.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Less worrying. Even though sometimes it's hard not to.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Christmas Eve with my mom's side, the usual thing. One of my favorite days of the year, that. Christmas Day just with my immediate family, I suppose.
22. Did you fall in love in 2004?
Yes.
23. Any one-night stands?
No.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Blackadder, probably, which I'd never watched before. I did gain a new appreciation for South Park, too. Of course the best thing I watched on TV this year was the World Series.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
There are probably more politicians that I specifically hate. And, speaking of TV, I hate whoever made The West Wing the strange thing thatit is today.
26. What was the best book you read?
Man, I read so much ... I loved Dave Gorman's books. I loved The Gods Themselves. I read a lot of Neal Stephenson; my favorite was The Diamond Age. I loved the Cerebus comics and the Alan Moore stuff I read.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Brian Wilson.
28. What did you want and get?
A good summer vacation.
29. What did you want and not get?
Enough credits to graduate. And an absentee ballot.
30. Favorite film of this year?
The Ladykillers, maybe. Oh, and I'm also going to steal
setharoo's answer of Super Size Me.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I have not had my birthday yet! I will be 23 in a couple of weeks.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Seeing more of my friends. Especially if I could drag them to England.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?
Most of my clothes are getting old, because I don't care about clothes. But now they're also too big for me. I dream of buying cool British clothes when I go back.
34. What kept you sane?
Andrew. The rest of my friends. And the Internet, which is always the medium for talking to one or the other.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
This is hard; I don't really do celebrity crushes.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The war is an obvious outrage, but the US economy and health-care system hit me hard, because they affect me and my family so much.
37. Who do you miss?
Everybody. You all are too damn far away.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
I'm not very good at having a "best" anything. Boo to hierarchies!
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004:
Firefox can catch on with non-geeks. The Red Sox can win the Series. People on the Internet might turn out to be just like that in real life, and not the stalkers and rapists the newsmagazines would have you believe. Good things can happen, even if you always thought they were too good to be true.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"With me everything is turning out to be / A kind of slapstick tragedy / Do you know what I mean?" (from "By the Light of the Cash Machine," by Glenn Tilbrook)
