Andrew, his dad and I went to visit a friend of theirs, Martin, a couple nights ago. He's about my parents' age but he was getting ready for a hike with a 90-pound backpack that was sitting ready on the living room floor. His fireplace uses coal. He has a ton of 78s and a wind-up gramophone. He thinks it'd be interesting to go to America but he'll never get on a plane.
He asked me where I live in America and I said Minnesota; he asked, "that's in the south, isn't it?" and I laughed and said no, it's by Canada. Later when he was putting more coal on the fireplace he asked me if they have electricity in Canada yet. I said they do but they're still a bit dubious about it.
Then he said something like, "Do they, in bars, drink out of— Well, I suppose that was South America ..." He then explained that someone he knows (if I was told, I can't remember who) said that wherever he was (in "South America") they use jars as glasses in bars. He had a bunch, apparently, so he brought one out and showed it to me.
"Oh, a Mason jar?" I said. My house if full of these; my mom cans vegetables and makes jam and things. He asked me if I could read what was written on it (he couldn't, in that light) so I looked and the jar said "Mason" on it. I explalined that I'm used to seeing these but not used to drinking out of them.
The best part, though, was that then Andrew pointed out that there's a line in "Blue Suede Shoes" that goes "Drink my liquor from an old fruit jar." Martin thought that was great, and seemed to be planning to use this in his defense should anyone question this.
Martin told me I should take the jar with me, something to remind me of home, which made me smile. His wife reminded me of it when we were leaving; I'd forgotten about it by then.
