Gmail

It didn't surprise me when Andrew said he got 6 more Gmail invites to see that I also had one. "Invite a friend to Gmail" it said in maroon on the otherwise pastel page when I signed in. And that little imperative sits there now, standing out and catching my eye as if it has something interesting to tell me.

But then the next day, it said I could invite 6 friends to Gmail. Ooo! Do I even have six friends? And half my address book seems to be people with Gmail already! But I've also noticed that when I read messages from people whose addresses aren't @gmail.com, next to the "reply" and "forward" it now says "invite [name of sender] to Gmail" in the same maroon letters.

But then the next day, yesterday, it said "invite 5 friends to Gmail." What happened to the other one? I hadn't touched them; I don't know anyone who wants it. (Though if anyone reading this does, let me know.) [livejournal.com profile] karaksindru suggested sleepwalking (as I noticed this in the middle of the night) or that I used it accidentally. The proximity of the "invite" to the other e-mail functions made the latter seem more likely ... though it's not as if I had recently forwarded or replied to anything that I could remember, so it would've had to be spectacularly bad aim on my part, but that's possible. Though considering my e-mail habits for the day that would've meant it went to either my parents or lj_notify@livejournal.com ... yes, such an exciting e-mail life I lead.

My eyes are still drawn to the maroon text on that page, but now it's not just an annoyance reminding me of how few friends I have and that any of them who want Gmail seem to already have it, it's also a mystery!

I keep seeing people mention 'gmail', why is it so special?

Because as far as webmail goes it's everything you could want - threading, a gigabyte of storage, intelligent searching, storage in multiple folders and so on. As far as web-based email goes you couldn't get better.

Believe it or not, in geek and nerd circles its also a status symbol, as in "I have a gmail account and you don't...you're a loser!!"

Of course it is. As I pointed out to Holly over and over in the period between me getting my account and me having my first invite so I could invite her ;)

Um, sure, though if its not a free service then I really couldn't do it right now. But, if it is... James Rowland, dracole2002@yahoo.com
Yup, that's me. And either way, thanx for the offer.
