Andrew says the fourth of July is 'the day we celebrate America's indepedence from us!'

He also likes to say that, in a case of typical American silliness, the fourth seems to be was the one day in that July on which nothing interesting happened, twentry years later (or whenever they wanted to start celebrating something) people remembered it wrong.

(As usual, this is a case of him knowing more about my country than I do (but then, the U.S. doesn't seem to like telling people about how silly it is, whereas other countries make a hobby of it), but it sounds like something we'd do.)

Happy fourth of July anyway, if applicable.

Not only did they lose us, but they lost Scotland and France as well. Silly people, they can't invade anywhere properly.

Oh, they've always been able to invade and conquer just fine. It's that whole holding onto with an iron grip thing they've had trouble with. :)

No, they really did sign the resolution in Congress on 4 July 1776. At least the national archives says so (http://www.archives.gov/national_archives_experience/charters/declaration.html).

As is my understanding, you'll only get fireworks in England if you're still there in November.

British people will never understand American patriotism.....when it comes to patriotism, their brains go, "Does not compute....does not compute."

The Declaration of Independence was a big step for us, obviously, but the most radical thing the Founding Fathers did was pass the Bill of Rights....the most radical set of laws ever enacted (successfully) in the history of the world. There is no way in hell it would pass ANYWHERE today....including America (if we had to pass it again, it would never happen).
