Dad wandered into the living room when I was watching a movie and asked "What's this?"

"Bend It Like Beckham," I said. I realized this gibberish wasn't very helpful to him, so I added, "It's a movie about a girl who plays football--I mean..." and then I couldn't remember the word soccer. Which I don't think is very fair. Stupid useless British words taking up coveted real estate in my brain.

I told [livejournal.com profile] stealthmunchkin about this and he was proud of me--naturally--and also told me things about other British sports, like that I can't play rugby because I have no testicles and grabbing them until the owner howls in pain is an integral part of rugby. Also I learned that it's played in countries with a longstanding tradition of having sex with sheep, such as Wales, Australia, and France.

But he also told me that France and Brazil were colonized by Spain. And he wonders why I can't believe him half the time.

that movie was too British for me. Not the good kind of British, you know, the entertaining kind. This was the incomprehensible kind.

Women in this country play rugby (union) (http://www.scrum.com/womens/country/newzealand/default.asp).

What does 'football' mean over there (USA) anyway? I would have thought it meant grid-iron.

Aargh! I dearsay I wouldn't want to tangle with my high-school woman's rugby team (at the time.)

Unfortunatly, that description (of the ovid ball) summs up about four different games. Is that Rugby Leage, Rugby Union, Australian Football/Aussie Rules/AFL or Grid-Iron/American Football?

Probably grid-iron though, in the other games they actually try to get the ball not show off with macho postering... :-)

(yeah yeah, just 'cause Rugby is our almost (de facto) national game...)

American football = grid-iron. Remember the World Football League and the London Monarchs? Or am I just showing my age?

Yep, I know Grid Iron is American Football, but I'm afraid I've never heard of the World Football League nor the London Monarchs. However, being on the other side of the world to London means I'm unlikely to be have been ever exposed to them.

(Google-fu shows them to be NFL/Grid-Iron/American Football team in the UK though.)

Six actually. Also Canadian Football, and Celtic Football.

Apparently Aussie Rules and Celtic are close enough in terms of rules that there's some sort of annual competition where teams that play both sports compete, using just those rules that are common to both sports.

It supposedly usually degenerates into a fistfight...

Yup. Same deal with Canadian and American football, same basic game, but with enough rule differences that you'll easily know which one your watching.

Players switch between the two fairly frequently though.

Argh!

No wonder the word "football" means (to me) "any physical contact team sport where there are people running around and kicking and/or carrying a ball around a field."

Of course, I missed out touch rugby too.

[wait until I find a dictionary please]

Refining my definition, I guess the game has have kicking the ball. It's gotta make contact with the foot occasionally. (And as part of the rules, not as I can imagine mad Irish men running around on a field with sticks doing..)

Same effect.

I loved the movie, once I got around to seeing it. It took a while. I thought of it as a "chick flick".

Brazil wasn't colonized by Spain? That's not just a Spanish dialect they speak? ¡Ay, caramba! :P

I did not claim that France has a tradition of having sex with sheep - I merely pointed out that they are French, which is almost as bad.

Heh, there's lots of flirting and random conversation on this post.

I just wanted to say that I'm glad you saw (and enjoyed) that movie. I watched it again recently and enjoyed it immensely. I think it's kind of like the Indian version of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which I also enjoy. :)
