"Did the Twins win this afternoon, Holly?" my dad asked when I went to the kitchen to look for dessert.
I was confused. The only reason I knew they were playing was because he asked me if I was watching the game when he came in for lunch. (Yes, this is a weekday and he would normally be at work, but he took the day off to finish planting, because he had to get it done before it rained...which he did, but only by about 20 minutes. Such in the life of a farmer; your activities and your stress level are largely dictated by the weather.) So as he ate his lunch we watched the Twins use four pitchers in one inning, and the third one gave up a two-run single, so we were behind 5-2 instead of 3-2.
"No," I said. "They lost." I couldn't quite remember if this was right--I can't even remember what day it is; these little details keep slipping my mind.
"Who did? The Twins lost?"
"Yeah..." He was being weirdly obtuse.
"No, they didn't," he said. Then he made fun of me for giving up on the game before i was over--which I really didn't remember doing, but must have, because until Dad told me about it I had not been aware that, with two outs in the ninth inning, Matthew LeCroy hit a grand slam. I should know better by know than to think the Twins can't pull off a last-minute win out of their butts. It's one of the things I like about them.

Date: 2004-05-20 04:07 am (UTC)The Twinkies have apparently won 2/3 of their games this year after being behind. That sort of never-say-die attitude may well carry them into the postseason.
Good show!

Date: 2004-05-20 05:58 am (UTC)They do still look pretty good, though it's sad that, with all this effort to improve their hitting, their pitching has gone from "stellar" to merely "good" this year. I have a feeling relying on their offense to win them games isn't going to serve them as well as relying on their pitching and defense did last year, because it's not as good. Still, they're fun to watch even though they stress me out until the end a lot.
But they should still make it to the postseason, if only because the AL Central is a cakewalk. They can win that more easily than they could win the wild card race.
Can you tell I have no one to talk about baseball with, normally? :-) I'll shut up now.
