Of nerve endings
Mar. 7th, 2004 04:56 pmI've been watching the first season of The West Wing on DVD recently (not my DVDs, sadly; I'm borrowing them from a friend). Yesterday I was watching one where C.J. explains that she's going to kiss Danny because she's been thinking about him too much and this is how she's decidedto deal with it: kiss him and then get past it and give her work the concentration it deserves.
During the kiss I was yelling at the TV, "No, don't do that! It's not gonna work." Of course it's not going to work, because that's how things go. Kissing will make things worse, not better. Because later, even when her brain knows perfectly well that she can't date this guy, her nerve endings will not care because all they'll remember is how much fun they had when they were touching him.
In Field of Dreams Ray Liotta says "I've heard that old men wake up and scratch itchy legs that have been dust for fifty years." You can't reason with nerve endings, so it's best to just not involve them.
But even though I was by myself, I still figured it was crazy of me to be talking to the TV.
