What member of Dave Matthews Band are you?
brought to you by Quizilla
"You're Carter Beauford! As Carter, you're the friendly, wise, and talented person that people can't help but love. You have an amazing, mysterious talent about you. People love you!"
I told Sarah Jean, my fellow Dave-aholic, about this quiz and she said she was Leroi. The guy I wanted to be! She wanted to be Boyd. (So we're all dissatisfied...) Boyd is the violin player, He's an interesting dude as well. And the bass player is kinda cute. All in all, Carter is probably the least interesting member of the band to me. Oh well, "people love me!"
I found this in the University Register, my campus's newspaper, today:
Imagine you awake one morning and stumble over to turn on the light, only...NO LIGHT! You pick up your cell only to discover that it lacks the diode necessary for wireless technology to work. You go to play the heartening sounds of Korn on your CD player only to find that IT DOESN'T EXIST!
It's then that you realize you are living in A WORLD WITHOUT EDISON.
Eh? Hooked? We are....
1) Without Edison, we'd all be speaking German right now [Darren, you are not allowed to comment on that]. From 1917-18, Edison worked on tons of government projects to help the war effort (as long as he didn't have to design arms--he just wasn't down with that)....
2) Without Edison, we would all answer the telephone "Ahoy-ahoy!" like Mr. Burns. Yup, that's where that came from! When Bell invented the telephone, he used to answer it that way, and Edison, who made great strides in furthering phone technology, politely suggested "hello" as a better option. A grateful nation thanks him.
3) Without Edison, there would be no lights. And we don't just mean your standard light bulbs, we're talking about every kind of lighting system we use today. Eidson worked out the first centralized electic lighting current distributor ever for the city of New York in 1882, which led to a three-wire central station from which electric light, heating, and power could be distributed. HOW COOL IS THAT?
4) But there's more! Edison discovered a previously unknown phenomenon whereby one could "dampen" or control the flow of current in a light bulb. We don't so much understand how, but it turns out this technology led to the development of the diode, which is responsible for the invention of radio, television, and computer transistors. Not to mention he invented the motion picture camera and allegedly the talking movie. His favorite invention was the phonograph, without which we would have no records, CDs, you name it. HELLO! Movies! TVs! CDs! Computers! Without Edison, there would be no modern culture as we know it! We couldn't even be typing this! AMAZING!
5) Without Edison, we wouldn't have steel alkaline storage batteries, wax paper, paper packaging tape, the talking doll (no kidding--we saw one of these creepy things! he put a tiny phonograph inside), the mimeograph machine, electric railways, and the electric pen. And where would the world be without the electric pen?
There's lots more that's just as amusing and information-packed, but I'm not going to type it all. Still, this was too cool.
I think I may start answering the phone "Ahoy-ahoy!" Not that I ever do answer the phone around here...I don't like the telephone, and it's never for me anyway.
