Marking the seasons

Today I'm trying to sort out our home insurance, which I've been informed needs to be renewed in the next thirty days.

That means it's only a month short of a year we've been living in this house now. Which is hard to believe: it either feels like we've been here forever, or that it's no time at all and I still have excuses for why nothing's been sorted out yet.

It's been a terrible and difficult year. I am anxious for the weather to improve and life to improve this spring.

I have lived in a house for longer than that, and I think I still have excuses for why everything is not actually sorted.

I hope the improving weather makes for improving life conditions, too.

I hear of people who don't get things sorted for years. We'll have been in our place 2 years this summer, and still lots of things not sorted and most of our books in boxes due to nowhere to put bookcases yet.

Yeah, but you've done building work and other things. That's the kind of stuff that needs doing here: there was a big list of stuff the survey said should be done before we moved in and there's been absolutely nothing done towards that. And then I lost my job and now it's all on hold anyway until we have a bit more income. There's lots of stuff that's depending on my DIY skills, too, which are not much, and that's stressful.

With us, we bought the house with the firm decision that we absolutely had to get on with things once we got in. It helped that the kitchen was just abysmal -- 1m2 -- and that the heating system was a mess. Oh and also that my piano was in storage until the living room got done.
