I'm sure it's purest coincidence that it was the train conductor I immediately thought was cute (she clearly had a sense of humor) who left me a heart on my ticket.

I was delighted to learn (from a chatty train conductor, years ago) that they're allowed to use whatever clipper or stamper they like as long as it's not offensive, and some conductors have a collection so they can use one that suits their mood.
I love that lots of people who work on trains are train geeks. I should introduce you to my friend Rob, some time. He's a lovely, High Anglican, Quaker-meeting-attending, gay, punk train driver and is a proper train geek.

Maybe we are to presume that the conductors with boring clippers/stampers/pens have no soul?

My two tickets yesterday got respectively: the date (clearly no poetry in his soul!), and 'okay, thanks, that's fine' ;)

I had a conductor once who used a Hello Kitty hole punch!
