Jenn said she was going to make me a scarf, but I've heard that before. I heard it a year ago, actually, when I saw her making a Harry-Potter maroon-and-gold scarf for a friend of hers who's obsessed with Harry Potter and I coveted it. Not because it was maroon and gold--I already have enough of that color scheme, due to my proximity to the University of Minnesota--but because it was thick and warm and nice. And things made by your friends are just cool.
I must have paid enough attention during the second Harry Potter movie, which I saw around that time, to notice that not all the scarves were maroon and gold. Some were green, and I like green. I found out later that green was Slytherin (and found out later than that that "Slytherin" is spelled with a y), and then I liked the idea even more. I could be evil, and green, and warm! All at once!
But she still hasn't finished that maroon and gold scarf for her friend, so even when Jenn promised me again yesterday that she would crochet me a scarf, I didn't get too excited. She said, "Buy me the yarn, and I'll do it!" She said, "It'll take me ... four hours." And then she said, "We could go to Alexandria tonight and get the yarn!"
"Now?" I said. I am getting old; it doesn't occur to me anymore that one would set out on excursions to Wal-Marts that are 45 minutes away at eleven o'clock at night. That's why Jenn is good for me. I looked at the microwave; I was popping popcorn. "After I eat my popcorn," I said. "And put on some underwear!" She agreed that those were respectable objectives, and so I ate the popcorn, I put on a bra, and we went to Alexandria.
The funny thing is, she's half-done with it now; I was to her room tonight to--in her words--"paint our nails and do homework and eat and watch movies and read Cosmo" ... and we actually ended up doing all those things, except the homework. And I saw that my scarf is getting along very nicely.
Soon, I'll be like my roommates, who have a habit of going around with hats or gloves and always scarves on, even if they're not wearing a coat. My roommates are cool, and chic. I am not chic, but I'll settle for being green and evil. And warm.
