Of course everybody wanted to know what I thought of Martin Freeman's Minnesota accent. But they all talked way too much and too fast for me to think they sounded Minnesotan!

Ironic for a weekend when I was worried I was talking too much. (My brain felt so Full Of Things by the time I went to bed last night I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep.)

He was doing the accent as well as he could've been coached to do. Clearly there were a few things they'd all been told to concentrate on -- and it wasn't the actors' fault how unbelievable most of the dialogue was!

I enjoyed the first episode a lot and can't wait for the next one, and it's been a long time since I said that about anything on TV!

James and I both said it made us want to watch the movie. And it's on Netflix so I can do it without braving the big boxes of DVDs (one of which Andrew's using as a table at the moment)! Ah, the catharsis of scraping ice off the windshield.

I counted one "you betcha" and a couple "jeeze"e. Oh yes and one uffda. Watching that body count I oddly feel safer in *Hackney* ;)

Also I pretty sure no one in MN or anywhere would really say "I think he's got the autism" <----????

And the vowels were so wrong in "uffda" that it took me a second to recognize that was what had been said...a lot of the vowels seemed weird. I mean, Martin Freeman's accent was clearly a small island floating on a sea of 'I AM BRITISH.'

I know, right. I couldn't figure that out. Were they trying to portray people as ignorant? Because even in rural Minnesota people know about autism, ffs (at least I always did; friends of my parents have a kid a bit younger than me who is autistic and my mom's job for 15 years was looking after an autistic kid in mainstream public school) and no one says "the..." like this any more, I can't even remember the last time I heard "he's got the cancer" and that's the most prominent example I can think of of something even vaguely analogous.

Which leaves me suspicious that it's just "let's laugh at the hicks from the sticks." Sigh.

Yeah, I think you're right on all counts.

(in my family, we said HOOF-da, ah for regional variances! :D)
