Twins

My cousin's wife just had twins.

They're called Isabelle Mavis [Mavis being my grandma's name, which will be very odd for the poor baby as it was odd even when my grandma was given it] and Elizabeth Kate [Kate is their mother's name, so fair enough there, and it might be a name with similar history on her side of the family as Mavis is to my cousin's].

I do hope my cousin and his wife don't mind when everybody immediately calls them Izzy and Lizzy. Because it can't just be me who thought that, right?

I hope it's intentional. I think it could be cool! I just really hope they aren't going to be surprised or disappointed by it.

Yeah, but they also seem the type to be completely shocked and never have realized it, having carefully chosen both names for unrelated reasons.

They are different derivation of the same route name!

However, I would have thought it's up to the parents (and later the children) to decide nicknames. I can remember feeling teased when other people in the family made up nicknames and they didn't stick.

Of course I absolutely believe that people should be able to say for themselves what they are called. But I think for the year or two until then, these twins might be stuck with that. Whatever their parents think, too -- I'm reminded of someone I used to know whose sister(-in-law?) had two boys, named Joseph and Jonah, and it was very important to her that these names never be shortened. But apparently everybody else just called them Joe and Joe.
