This week's work newsletter:
Nov. 20th, 2025 01:05 pmMaking [workplace] a great place to work involves us all. It's about everyone playing their part, and of course that includes myself and the Executive Leadership Team.
It's important that we lead by example and that's why we've signed up to some important commitments following your feedback via the recent Colleague Voice survey and listening groups.
Thanks to my involvement with EDI via helping run one of the protected-characteristics staff networks, I know this has been a big fucking deal for our EDI lead, she's been working a lot and trailed this to us earlier this week, so I'm intrigued (if not overly optimistic...) to finally see what results from this.
I've recorded a five-minute video (link) to talk about these commitments, or you can read the transcript (link).
I'm a transcript person. So I click on that and... Sharepoint tells me "You don't have access."
Our internal communication people are good and work hard and with the amount of stuff they put out it's inevitable that every so often a link is gonna go wrong or a file won't have the right permissions like this.
But it had to be this one about how we're all in this together, didn't it.
I did laugh, bitterly.

Date: 2025-11-20 01:25 pm (UTC)(I requested access to the transcript in hopes that this would alert them to the oversight, and I got it a few minutes later. So hopefully anyone else who wants it can read the transcript too.)
I go back to work and I'm filling in a government consultation. Question 13 was clearly copied and pasted from question 11, which is fine because it should differ in only one word (why do you disagree with the objective "make it more X" and what alternatives would you suggest etc.etc. should become "make it more Y"), but they've forgotten to change X to Y. So now in my answer I have to make it clear to them that I disagree with Y in this case...
I'm not normally an extensively retail-oriented person, so it's annoying to keep noticing these things today!

Date: 2025-11-20 07:58 pm (UTC)We have to name sharees individually and even then it often doesn't stick...
Oh lord that sounds like a nightmare.
It definitely doesn't always stick for us, but as far as I know "share with all domain.org.uk" does work -- I've certainly used it a lot!

I'm reminded of all the government sites where the accessibility links inevitably have a note saying "This document may not be accessible to people using screenreaders" under them.

Date: 2025-11-21 05:12 pm (UTC)Yeah they still have that on every single PDF that doesn't have an HTML version, and it winds me up when it's documents about accessibility!
My goodness
Date: 2025-11-21 09:01 pm (UTC)...this is so damn apt.
