One of the nicest sounds I regularly hear is the little tinktinktinktinktinktink of V tapping her watercolor brushes on the side of a little ceramic pot of water as she is painting.

I can notice it even downstairs (they paint upstairs) if the house is quiet, and it just makes me smile every time I do.

It's such a calm, orderly sound in itself. But I love its connotations: if it's happening, she has enough energy to paint. It feels cozy to hear it.

Do you hear any little ordinary sounds that make you happy?

The sound of children squabbling outside has always made me happy. I know, I know, I should say they're playing - I'm sure they would say they're playing! - but I wonder all the time if they ever manage to find time for play with all the bickering they do over the rules.

Certain kinds of playful screaming from children always evoke the intro to "If You Are Feeling Sinister" in my head...

I suppose for me sometimes the little ticking-creaking noise our electric stove burners make periodically when on is something I kind of appreciate, and maybe the gentle sizzle of sauteing vegetables... I am not sure I'd thought about pleasant little sounds much before.

Cat snores. They're so tiny and cute and just an indication that everything is safe enough for them to be that relaxed.

has a very noisy nose and is fond of sighing. Her wheezy breathing and snoring are so soothing.

Birdsong.

The sound of distant freight trains.

The faint whirr of my bicycle chain on a silent country road.
