I only commit poetry for the strongest of feelings, since I am a truly terrible poet.
A more fitting tribute to Bat might be to get really drunk or have really wild sex, but for now while the sun's out and I'm supposed to be working, all I can do is write a poem.
Someone who loves you told me this morning
that when Carrie Fisher
died you resonated with the
"space mom says take your meds" thing, so
I did
Today
my meds make me think about
the selfie you took with your first vial,
the last message I sent you (I had just checked of course)
said I was so happy for
you and your testosterone.
Like we'd gotten
visas to the same country: our passports failed us:
after that F later pages hold the stamps
that more accurately describe us.
You spent only a month
or so in that country
I didn't even get to find you there yet. I've been looking forward to talking
about why we were there
and what it means for us.
I'm glad that, if I didn't get to meet you,
Gary did. You and I
crisscrossed the Atlantic but we are
still tied together by
petting
the same dog.
His ears are so soft.
Today he's doing one of the jobs
he's best at: keeping
his saddest human company.

It's very first-draft (very drafty!), but I wanted to post it today.

Ah, poetry
Date: 2024-01-18 11:13 pm (UTC)is the best language for grieving.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Re: Ah, poetry
Date: 2024-01-21 04:25 pm (UTC)And my loss is so small compared to some people's. This is a person I knew via diffrentcolours, who had been friends with them since the late 90s.
