Last weekend [personal profile] diffrentcolours talked about trying to make the weekends different from during the week, even if it's just having different things for breakfast.

It was a long week for everyone, so we all discussed last night about things we could do to make this weekend fun and special. Sometimes I fear this seems hopeless in lockdown but he suggested stuff like getting food from a place in the city centre, someplace too far to deliver but we could go pick it up, and maybe tidying the dining room table and eating together there. We had to do some DIY shopping too, to fix a problem caused by the curtain rail breaking the other day (and then fitting the new curtain rail).

So we went to Wickes in Glossop after carefully researching that it had what we needed, which the nearer Wickes didn't. Then we got there and couldn't find the precise thing we'd called ahead to ask about anyway, and got something similar enough which I think it turns out we could've got in the nearby Wickes. But this way we got to see the Peak District! We saw houses made of stone and snow lightly sprinkled on the tops of the Pennines. It's only eight miles or something but it really did feel different. And of course it's a big deal: it's the furthest we've been since Halloween.

We got back and ordered food from a place called Viet Shack, we got just tons of stuff because everything on the menu looked so good. And we got the DIY stuff off the table and spread out all the little cardboard boxes. We got a lot of starters including a vegan "sharing platter" so I kept opening boxes and thinking hmm, what can I eat here? And my main was from the "fries" section of the menu, which seems to be "any of their delicious food on fries" ([personal profile] mother_bones had Quack Fries with duck on them!), mine was the vegan mock-chicken (called Chikaan I think?) in peanut sauce and it was divine. It was like poutine except possibly even better because I like peanut butter so much better than gravy.

And then we got the curtain rail up! It took expanding foam and the hammer drill and the tiniest allen wrench ever and a million other things but we did it. And we tidied up after it. And then just sat around for half an hour quietly looking at our phones until I realized the only reason I hadn't gone to bed at that point was that I was too tired to, and that wasn't going to get any better.

Hopefully I'm even exhausted enough to sleep properly. I've been struggling a lot with insomnia still. At least if I'm lying awake I can think about what a weird and nice day it's been, full of little achievements.

...OMG you have made me realise that I've been doing the "different breakfasts at the weekend" thing for a few months now, and I hadn't acknowledged it as a coping strategy. *headdesk* I make pancakes or dippy eggs with soldiers on a Saturday, and porridge with yummy things in and crispy bacon on the side on a Sunday. Your foodie treat sounds wonderful.
