Today's Brown Envelope of Doom actually had good news!

My PIP should've run out in June this year but I've heard nothing about it. And now all this letter says is its been extended for another 18 months or so from now. (I guess after that I might magically not have my lifelong optic nerve deficiency any more and stop being visually impaired by then, so they have to check. This is the system working as intended; lifetime awards that were possible under DLA aren't now.) At least this keeps the wolf from the door a bit longer.

Yeah I don't have a lot of "current" medical evidence, this is part of the problem with not actually having anything treatable! I guess medical letters are the one thing you're not hurting for!

Nice to have a bit of an extension. Pain in the ass to have to do more paperwork at all. I'm quite familiar.

Yes I never had to navigate the U.S. system as an adult but I understand it's similar there: they'll deny everybody and expect the people who really need it can appeal and fight and fight and fight.

As Tiger says, they deny people hoping they'll die during the appeals process. He's a bit jaded, after several years and a new application in process, again.

Everybody I know who's been through this process is pretty jaded. It really surprises other people. Andrew's family found out what it's like after his dad had a stroke last year; they couldn't believe he had to fight for benefits at all because he was so clearly unable to work. Andrew and I told them, but his sisters were still upset when he got rejected and had to appeal. I tried to help them play the game, answer the questions the way they have to be answered, because I know how it works now. I knew what would've gone wrong, and I helped try to fix it, but I still think his family think Andrew and I are way too cynical. :)
