cosmolinguist | [157/366] the future we want

Hi I am the journaler formerly known as hollymath.

I was musing on Mastodon the other day that it's funny how I spent almost my whole online life coming up with screen names that were a) puns b) involved my first name or, overwhelmingly, c) both... and now I'm all "nnnnrgh don't want all these Holly puns any more!" It's been almost a year since I changed my masto username away from the one I'd copied over from twitter (hollyamory).

Changing my username in some places is easy, but my whim was not yet motivation enough to buy a Dreamwidth rename token for $15. I don't begrudge the cost, I'm happy for them to have money. I just wasn't gonna do it.

Today

haggis saw this and offered to just buy it for me, which is so kind of her. "If it helps make the world less scratchy..." she said. And I thought yes, you know, it might.

But then I had the problem of it immediately appearing in my inbox and me still being at the point in my musings where I knew I wanted to change my name but I didn't know what to. This amused me enough that I told Mastodon about that too... And within five minutes two people (one of them

diffrentcolours, one someone I only know from Mastodon) made exactly the same suggestion:

just sayin, something like ‘cosmolinguist’ sounds like you study languages from beyond the stars and that’s the future we want

I like "cosmology" because the "logos" is a reference to language and discourse, but it's already taken. How about "cosmolinguist" - one who studies the language of the stars?

diffrentcolours, he even looked it up and clarified that "it's from PIE rather, but 'Greek logos is directly concerned.' Poor logos, it is doin' a concern."

cosmology would've been a fantastic name, but since it is not to be and there was such serendipity in the answers I got, it is a sign and I took the hint.

So yeah this is my name here now! I'm not really a linguist, much less To The Stars, but I won't argue.

So, for lucky us who’ve been following you for a while, it’s an clear and delightful remodel.

It's a fitting name change for you, for as long as I have been privileged to read you. It also helps stick the "Cosmo is the correct name to use now" idea more firmly in my head (not that it had a chance of falling out).

Both names are correct. :) But I'm Holly at home and work so I guess I'm being Cosmo more on the internet now in lockdown to help balance it out.

Thank you for telling me. I don't want to use a dead name when there's a perfectly good one right here to use instead.

But yeah, I'm treating Cosmo like a middle name (it's much better tban my official middle name!) and I'm one of those people who'll go by either of their first or middle names.
