Cassini and me
Jun. 30th, 2011 10:09 pmI read on Twitter today that it's the seventh anniversary of Cassini's reaching Saturn.
(What? Doesn't everybody follow spaceships on Twitter?)
I was shocked. Surely it can't have been seven years! Of course a little arithmetic proved me wrong right away, but I could hardly believe it.
I still remember, when Cassini got to Saturn, musing how impossibly long seven years seemed when I first heard of its launch; that was the time it would take to get there. But then, all of a sudden, there it was!
Those seven years, between 1997 and 2004, brought me places and times that I never would've imagined. And I think the last seven years have been pretty monumental for me too, though at least this time I'm only a couple of miles away from where I posted that 2004 entry, rather than 4000 miles away like the previous jump had been.
Still, what I have done is nothing compared to what Cassini (and its little buddy Huygens) have achieved in that time; for all I grumble about how we'll never even get back to the fracking Moon at this rate, some incredible, excitig stuff has happened. An awful lot has been learned.
Go look. It's remarkable, breathtaking.

Hmm. 97-2004 saw some monumental shifts in my own life, too. I think I might just steal your inspiration and write a post of my own ;)
