"Jesus it's cold," Andrew said when he came in from buying us breakfast from the bakery. "And that's me saying that!" Indeed. He doesn't own a coat and if it wasn't for me and the dog he'd never put the heat on.

I checked the temperature and its 36 (I still have my weather app set on Fahrenheit because I can't for the life of me get a good idea of, like, how to dress based on Celsius degrees), which is not great obviously but no worse than it has been some mornings lately. Great, I thought. If he's cold I'll have to put on all my clothes at once in order to go to uni today.

"It feels like a Minnesota winter!" he said.

"I look forward to waiting for a bus, then," I said. "Something I don't even have to do in Minnesota."

"You'll have to put on a woolly hat and gloves today!" Andrew said (as if I haven't been for weeks already). "And maybe take Gary in your pocket to keep warm!"

Aww. He wouldn't like the bus and I'm not sure he'd sit still for a lecture in language policy and planning, but I really love this idea. He is always a nice warm little doggie version of a hot water bottle.

Ah, is it time for the annual round of "prairie people noticing that UK people have noticed that it's cold" already?

Foil-wrapped baked potatoes remain my favourite pocket handwarmers for cold mornings (wrap them further in tea towels to avoid burning yourself or the contents of your pockets, by lunchtime they've cooled down enough to eat, if you hate hate hate cold potatoes and have no reheating facility then this is a risky prospect but I don't mind them too much), but they do require getting up early enough to bake potatoes, and having a coat with decent pockets.

I'm sure a dog would be better, if wigglier. (I would not eat the dog. Too hairy and cute.)

Ferrets in the pockets are surely the stylish way to keep warm.

Keeping my (fingerless gloved) fingers crossed that was 36°F outside.

(Half the population is still wearing shorts here, where it's a balmy 38°F but no wind.)

I think the radio person said it was 36F here today. I've gained insulation/padding and gotten to an age where I seem to be warmer much of the time. Ratties in pockets are also nice warmers, if wiggly.

Andrew reminds me that we have a bakery nearby and I haven't gone lately.
