At the "women's" writing group this month I got talking to my friend from Sri Lanka about the burdens of objects our families leave us with. Both her parents are gone. The big box of unwearable jewelry her mother left her with is not gone: she can't wear the jewelry, can't sell it, can't give it away, can't keep it. But has kept it. She's an only child too (though properly, not like me). She's in a different country. It's hard.

Our other friend who runs the group, nice as she is, doesn't understand. She has her own mess with her siblings and parents (don't we all) but it's so removed from ours it feels like we're speaking different languages. Nice to have someone who knows mine. I might link her to that thing I wrote the other day.

Thanks for linking to your brilliant essay on stuff management.

I'd hope there's an entirely different frame-of-mind for expats to bond over.
