" 'Scuse me, love," someone said to me as I was walking to my bus.

"I'm not gonna ask you for money," she said. "But...could I have an ice cream?" There was a kiosk selling ice cream just next to us.

It's hot out; I'd want ice cream too. So I said "Of course."

A man nearby said "God bless you, she's been asking for a while." They got a tub so they could share. She already knew her order (caramel sauce); no doubt they'd had time to think about it. The woman serving the ice cream told me I was good for doing it too, but I didn't want praise.

It only cost me £1. I can't think of another thing I could've done with that pound that would've brought such happiness into the world.

I paid and scurried off to the bus stop.

That's manageable. It would have been more like £4 in London.

I was expecting it to be more like that, but this little kiosk's gimmick is that the ice creams are a pound. It was only a little tub, and it was soft-serve so it's cheap to make I guess.
