[195/365] Elan Valley dams
Jul. 14th, 2019 11:16 pmWhen our friend Emma found out we were in Llandrindod Wells, she recommended we check out the Elan Valley dams at Rhayader on our way back.
diffrentcolours and I do like our grand civil engineering marvels (I left work in a rush one day a few months ago to catch a lift with him to go see the Anderton Boat Lift) and we thought we deserved a little treat before heading back to England.
We happened to be talking about this in the by-election HQ yesterday, and the organizer kindly gave us some work to do this morning in Rhayader (Rhaeadr), so we'd be right nearby when we finished. After a tiring morning -- us stakeboarding and Mike delivering leaflets -- we met up for lunch (I watched the end of New Zealand's poor doomed innings in the pub rather than being sociable; I noticed an NZ flag on a table near us and when D pointed them out to me as fellow not-England fans, one of the kiwi couple sitting at that table said I could be one of them, aww) and then went to see one of the dams.
I tried taking pictures but it's the kind of grand landscape that defies ordinary attempts to enclose it in a photograph. (You can see good pictures at that link above.) Both Emma and the Lib Dem who lives in Rhayader told us it wasn't as impressive this time of year when the water level is low, but we can't help when the by-election is held and it was still making the three of us happy to see it. The water being low just meant I got to see more of the dam. It was nice to see kids and dogs and other people around on this nice sunny day; Emma said she'd been there for barbecues as a kid and it looks like that is still what people do there.
There are six dams and, with the long drive ahead of us, we didn't have time to see them all, or go to the visitors center we drove past. But it was just the break we needed between the Lib Demmery and the long drive home.
