[187/365] the sounds of the summer
Jul. 6th, 2019 11:44 pmTook Gary to get tortured his nails clipped by
mother_bones and
diffrentcolours, who've got it down to an art form and can deal with him pretty well. I'm forever grateful that they'll help us like this.
We watched Janelle Monáe's set at Glastonbury on the iPlayer after that, me and
diffrentcolours telling
mother_bones where it differed from what we'd seen on Thursday (which was not a lot). We agreed that the sound had been better for us, but this way I got to see the dancing and the many impressive costumes so that was pretty great.
We'd watched Lizzo's set before that, and if anything could make me love her more than her new album has already done, it is seeing her sing some of those songs and just be her sweary, delighted delightful self.
I think she takes a lot of the stuff Monáe is good at -- that fierceness and defiance, an awareness of what messages they're sending their fans which leads them to be very explicit about everything from politics to self-esteem. Lizzo feels more personal and maybe sometimes less grand and sweeping than Monáe's politics, but we all know the personal and political are all part of the same thing.
