[335/365] walking on my own two feet
Dec. 1st, 2023 06:08 pmToday was my followup appointment after the surgery (which was only two and a half weeks ago now but feels like years).
The wound care guy was happy with the state the wound was in and took the stitches out. The doctor was happy with the xrays of my foot.
I've got a "air cast" boot, and I can walk with that as much as I can tolerate.
Even if that's just enough to help me get out of the house (involves a step and a lip on the door, so a step too high to jump up in both directions) so I can walk the dog, around of the house (both bathrooms and the kitchen involve a step that I couldn't make without leaving chairs around in annoying places), that's a total game changer.
Since I got home I've done two dog walks, gotten myself drinks and a snack, closed the curtains everywhere downstairs after it got dark, and was able to pick up and carry the dog -- the safest way to transfer Gary between rooms while the cleaner is here. It has been amazing.
My ankle doesn't hurt, but it does feel odd. Like I sat on it funny, or like I banged it on something a few days ago and bruised it (it's not actually bruised, it looks totally fine). And it gets a little more odd, still not painful, when I put weight on it. Which has actually been difficult to do, psychologically -- a month of "the floor is lava" for this foot has been more than enough for me to develop new reflexes. Especially when I first stand up, I'm having to consciously tell myself it's okay to put weight on that leg.
Another part of this problem is easier to deal with: the shoes I've been wearing have a thinner sole than this boot does, so that's also making me walk a little lopsided. I'll try my sturdier tennies tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.
