Oct. 30th, 2023

I had a very quiet day.

I stayed in the flat (except for Gary's little walks in the yard outside our door) until this evening when I helped fetch takeout for dinner and briefly visited a friend's birthday party.

I didn't sleep great last night (Gary needed some company during the night, and also a trip out for a pee which is a bit of a production with all the stairs here, so between those things I was awake from 3:30 to around 7) and just generally I think the last few days are catching up with me.

It's very understandable yet very not-fun because knowing what's happening doesn't make it stop! I'll be okay but in the meantime my depression is latching on to anything in the vicinity...yeah, it's no fun.

Gary had a great day though: he ate his food in a reasonably timely manner which means he had his meds (including his new anti-nausea ones) at an acceptable time because the only way we can get him to ingest them is to grind them to powder and put that in his food.

He got even more adventurous and more curious as the day went on, adapting to his strange environment and his new condition (as I understand is the norm after a vestibular episode, his head has kept its tilt...though he was always a head-tilty kind of dog anyway and it also seems to be more or less pronounced depending on how much attention he's paying, but it sure complicates him only having an eye on one side of his head!). He did the stairs on his own today more, he got used to the ridiculously complicated landscape outside our flat, with a drainage ditch and cobbles and all sorts. He wasn't overly interested in his treats but he did happily eat some while playing games with MB, and he had some new treats from the pet store right next to where we're staying, including some bedding to make up for stuff that wasn't salvageable after he barfed on it on Friday.

He's continued to seem absolutely his old self, if subdued. Just enough that you can pick him up without him trying to bite you and he doesn't react to all his usual triggers as loudly as he normally does! But really if you hadn't known that the previous 48 hours had happened, you wouldn't guess from his behavior today.

We are all still overwhelmed at this, there's been another happy tear or two shed, and many photos taken and excited updates shared about things like him eating his food or looking cute.
