It genuinely did freak me out a little, I couldn't clean it up right away because I couldn't figure out what'd happened so my brain got kind of stuck.
I was helping my employer make a cake. He'd cracked three eggs into a bowl on the kitchen counter. Soon after I stood with my back to it putting something away.
I'd happened to notice the eggs, one yolk cracked and two whole, in the bowl but hadn't thought any more about them because I had to do other stuff first.
Then I heard a small noise I recognized as the bowl sliding a very small distance on the counter. I'm forever bumping into stuff without realizing, so I'm very familiar with such noises!
But this time I hadn't done it! No part of me could reach the bowl. And when I turned to look, I saw a thing decidedly not within the realm of "things I can do by bumping into something":
Ome of the eggs, cracked yolk in an expanding pool of sticky clear white, was on the countertop.
My first thought was that the ceramic bowl had cracked or broken but the two other eggs, yolks still whole, were still there in it as if nothing had happened. The other one looked like it'd leapt out. Like a goldfish out of a bowl.
No one had been looking at it so we don't know how one egg got from a normal ceramic bowl to look a moment later like it'd been very deliberately cracked onto the countertop. It was genuinely an eerie sight, as I said: even as most of me was thinking about how annoying it is to clean up raw egg, another part laughed at how ridiculous it is that maybe the most supernatural-feeling thing that's happened to me was about a goddam egg.
There was one egg still left in the carton so at least the cake-baking could continue. Hopefully it has turned out okay! (I left work before the cake had finished baking.)
