[181/365] haircut

At work today, L told me my haircut is "definitely gayer" than the undercut I had before. He then, delightfully, expounded upon this by adding "it's like a combination of a militaryish high and tight and...a pixie cut."

I love that.

I got it cut a week or two ago so it was pretty chilly at first but it knew it'd be worth it when the weather warmed up. :) My hair is so thick it's really uncomfortable to have any amount of it once I start sweating.

I knew I'd like it, I've had hair more or less like this before (not shaved quite so short on the sides, but otherwise the same) but it's funny how immediately it seemed normal to me: I'd been used to longer hair for years now and I didn't miss it, was never surprised at the lack of it... And no one I saw afterward really seemed surprised or mentioned it much either. It seems like this is a very unsurprising way for me to look. :)

I love it. I can't style it as nicely as the hairdresser did (this photo was taken just after I left her) but even so it still looks good which I think is a sign of a great haircut. :)

By the way, how much maintenance is an undercut? How often do you need to go to the hairdressers?
I keep thinking I'd like to get one, but whenever I mention it at the hairdressers they look at me like I don't know what I'm asking for, because I look too square or something.

Strange that they seem confused -- it's a common thing hairdressers should know about!

My hair is thick and grows fast, and I really like it to be really short (I get a #1) so ideally mine would be done every four weeks or so (in reality it's often more like 6 or 8 by the time I get around to it but I think it's pretty untidy by that point). If your hair is finer or you don't want it quite that short or don't mind it getting a little longer, you could leave it longer between haircuts.

I think that they think that I don't understand what I'm asking for, because what would someone who looks like me want with that sort of haircut!

(My greatest fear when getting a haircut is coming out looking like I work in a bank, and it happens far too often.)

Ugh, yeah hairdressers can be far too judgmental or conservative sometimes. I had a hell of a time just finding someone who'd cut my undercut like I wanted, rather than trying to make it "more feminine" than I'd asked for. Even when I went to a barber's called Fellaz, they eventually tried to make it feminine.

Maybe find a picture of the kind of thing you'd like, and go in with that to show them? It might help you convince them that you do know what you're talking about and you do really want it like this.
