I have one of those page-a-day calendars that says it’s about “Forgotten English,” a Christmas present from lostpositive. At the bottom of today’s page it says

In The English Husbandman (1635), Gervase Markham advised, “In this month of July, eschew all wanton bed-sports.”

If they followed this advice, a lot of my friends would suddenly have a lot more free time...

I can think of several occasions where it was mutually decided not to pursue 'wanton bed-sports' in July, simply because it was too bloody hot.

That might well be the reason for this admonition; with no context I can't say.

(It's not hot though! Okay I know it's only me that's thinking this, but I can't help it.)

I'll have you know I eschewed wanton bed-sports punctiliously in July 1635. Not a smidgen of wantonness, my bed was as chaste as the day is long.

However, in July 2009, I clearly have 7 months left of my sexual peak (according to the Metro, women have the best sex between 28 and 30) so I shall be pursuing wanton bedsports as diligently as I can (in this heat!)
