Frankly, the new casting sounds better: I have a soft squishy spot for Alan Arkin.
I fell in love with his puzzled Soviet captain in THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! (1966) and it's been a wild ride. That movie was part of a mid-60s trend: huge casts, wild random running in circles, with high levels of absurdist comedy. Terry Thomas often appeared, but not in that one.
My favorite 70s Alan Arkin is THE IN-LAWS. He's the father of the groom, and maybe a secret CIA agent, duelling with the Peter Falk at his straight-man-est. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079336
